By 2008, Jessie Li and Kara Chomistek had grown tired of watching talented friends move away from Alberta. At that time, aspiring artists and fashion designers had to move to bigger centres to pursue their careers. “There was no industry for fashion here,” Li says. “There was no community for it.” But where others saw limitations, Li and Chomistek saw an opportunity.
The two Calgarians launched PARKSALE, an outdoor market for young artists and fashion designers. Barely a decade later, that small market has become a thriving fashion and lifestyle non-profit, with Chomistek as president and Li as vice-president. The team runs PARKSALE annually, as well as biannual fashion shows PARKSHOW and PARKLUXE. They’ve hosted pop-up shops at West Edmonton Mall and Calgary’s Chinook Centre, and now they’re trying something new: PARKSHOP at Londonderry Mall.
PARKSHOP is a curated collection of the most successful lines and standout pieces Li and Chomistek have seen over the last 10 years. “This is a really great opportunity for us to showcase Canadian designers,” Li says. More than half the store’s products are Canadian-designed, and of those products, 75 – 80% are seasonal collections from designers. The remaining 25 – 30% is PARK collaborations; these are products and designs Li and Chomistek have created in partnership with designers, including a popular SPBDAU PARK fanny pack, a collection of knits for Edmonton designer Malorie Urbanovitch and maybe even a PARK bomber jacket.
There’s also a space in PARKSHOP for PARK CURATED, in which PARK’s featured designers assemble collections of their favourite international private label lines. Currently, PARKSHOP has collections curated by Malorie Urbanovitch and by Calgary jewellery designer Kate Hewko.
It’s always been Li and Chomistek’s goal to connect designers to consumers, and they’re excited to be nurturing that connection at a permanent venue—especially in an environment that shares their passion for local talent. “Londonderry has sought out some great Canadian businesses to be part of the centre,” Li says. “We love how community-oriented it is.”
