Whole Body Skin Care for the Summer

2018-08-13 00:00:00 -0600 +

Finding the right skin care regime takes time and concerted effort. It changes with every new season, different geological locations, and as we mature. When the skin care conversation arises however, we often consider our face and neglect the rest of our body. At this point, you are likely an expert of facial skin care, but here are five ways to nourish every other inch of your skin for the rest of the summer. Scrub for A Summer Glow While it isn’t recommended to scrub daily, using an activated charcoal body scrub like Detox Rocks from Bath & Body Works helps to purify the skin as detoxifying white clay exfoliates, and is the best way to start your week off right. Using this as part of a regular practise will keep your skin soft and glowing all summer long. Blemish-Free for the Summer While acne can appear on the body in any season, the heat of the summer can make matters more problematic as we tend to sweat more in the sun. Cleanse your back, chest and shoulders daily with Neutrogena’s Body Clear from Shopper’s Drug Mart so your summer wardrobe doesn’t have to be neglected. Moisturizing Body Mist Just because you protect your skin with SPF and moisturize before your day begins doesn’t mean your work is done for the day. To help keep your skin feel calm, hydrated and ever-fresh in the summer sun, bring along The Body Shop’s Coco Calming Face Mist to rehydrate your whole body. Don’t Forget Your Scalp We can all agree that applying sunscreen is a no brainer. But have you remembered to spray your scalp on the daily? Shiseido’s Ultra Sun Non-Sticky Protection Spray from Hudson’s Bay is the perfect way to ensure you are UV protected from your scalp to your toes. Getting Handsy with Youthful Skin While you’re at Hudson’s Bay, pick up a bottle of Absolue Hand SPF 15 by Lancome. Although moisturizing our hands is second nature in the dry Alberta climate, we don’t often think about how important using an SPF is on this thin skin. To avoid wrinkles and conquer dark spots, use this combination of sea algae and wild yam with licorice extracts to reinforce elasticity, replenish firmness, and intensely hydrate.

Style Q & A with Anton Atienza

2018-07-16 00:00:00 -0600 +

Anton Atienza is one of Edmonton’s most stylish residents. With an ability to take dad sneakers and a pair of trousers, creating a must-have look on the streets of YEG, we are thrilled Anton is able to take a moment to talk about his personal style. Although he may appear to be a fashion or food blogger, the honest truth is, this is just Anton in real life. One of the fortunate ones, Anton had his aha fashion moment when he was leaving junior high school. Like most youngsters, Anton was at the mercy of his parent’s style choices, but when the fashionista was able to collect and decide style for himself, he did just that. Music, travel, and even Instagram have been a source of style inspiration, and that variety of inspirers helps Anton create something special. Today he tells Londonderry how to avoid overspending on fashion without sacrificing style, trends to watch for, and how to keep up with fashion while making them all your own. Stay Lux Luxury items can be really tempting, but Anton says there are plenty of ways to avoid paying high costs while still achieving personal fashion. First, he says “pre-loved luxury never hurt anyone!” Try looking for local designer consignment accounts on Instagram like Forever Red Soles, or, be patient and wait for a sale. If you know you want a beautiful designer piece but just aren’t willing to spend the money, don’t be afraid to “look at similar designer-inspired pieces from different brands,” Anton adds. Hands-Free Fashion Essentials As far as fashion trends are concerned, Anton says he’s sticking by his prediction for mini or micro bags – and yes, that includes belt bags and fanny packs. “I believe more and more people want to be hands-free with their outfits, and want to only carry essentials,” he says. “No one has time for excess baggage or digging through their bags to find what they’re looking for!” Anton adds that his personal trend is “dad sneakers!” The lightweight shoe was something Anton assumed he would hate, but after trying on a comfy pair, he says he feel in love, and hasn’t turned back. Stand Out, Naturally To make an outfit truly unique, Anton suggests choosing one item, like a pair of sunglasses, or shoes, or a bag to add. The key here, he says, is to find something that truly stands out, without being outrageous. By doing this, “people can easily spot what’s unique about your outfit.” Although he may seem like the fashion expert, Anton says he is still experimenting with different trends with an ever-evolving artform. “Fashion is a way of expressing yourself and showing your own personal style and craft. Even after all these years, I am still experimenting with my style and making fashion mistakes along the way.” Are you ready to make some style changes based on Anton’s tips? Check out what Londonderry has in store, starting with some of these Anton-approved trends. Classic Sneakers One of the best and most comfortable sneaker on the market is the classic Reebox leather shoes, available for men and women at Champs. Fabulous Fanny Packs Great for busy shopping days, holding onto your kids hands while walking on the sidewalk, or going out to a summer night market, the Matt & Nat Dwell Belt Bag at Hudson’s Bay is the perfect solution to staying hands-free while keeping in total style. Grungy Denim Style Choosing an acid wash denim jacket, like this grungy style from Urban Planet is a great alternative to some designer denim jackets which can cost a month’s rent, or more! Consider trying the jacket at a fraction of designer prices with a pair of trousers like Anton. Photos of Anton Atienza courtesy of Anton.

Celebrating Canada Day with These Cool Facts

2018-07-02 00:00:00 -0600 +

Canada is such a unique place to live – a country that isn’t difficult to love with such beautiful landscapes and polite people. It doesn’t hurt that we have largest number of donut shops per capita in the world either. But beyond our maple syrup, rugged lumberjack appearance and well-mannered disposition, Canada stands out for so many reasons. To celebrate Canada Day, we gathered a list of cool things we love about Canada, which we’re certain you’ll love too. Bigger Parks are Better Did you know many of Canada’s National Parks are actually bigger than some countries around the world? Take Wood Buffalo Park right here in Alberta, which is bigger than Switzerland. The newest – and world’s largest – dark-sky preserve helps preserve nighttime ecology for the park’s large populations of bats, night hawks and owls. Canada In Numbers Being in a country that values nature as much as Canada does, we should be proud that our country holds 10 percent of the world’s forests. And although most people are aware of how lucky we are to have large bodies of fresh water, did you know our Great Lakes alone make for about 18 percent of the world’s fresh lake water? Last but certainly not least in the numbers game, 42 percent of the Canadian population have a higher education qualification. Graduation caps off to you Canadians. Sorry, Not Sorry We might need to work on how often we apologize, especially since we say it so often that the government had to create a law – the Apology Act – to protect people from themselves. Apparently, people were so apologetic in Canadian courts, it made them appear guilty. Now, the Apology Act makes it clear that any form of apology is not an admission of fault or liability but rather an expression of sympathy or regret. That’s adorable. We’re not sorry that we publicly show empathy for others, and that’s something to be proud of. And, we’re certainly not sorry to be part of such an amazing country either.

How to Become a Summer Festival Fashion Queen

2018-06-18 00:00:00 -0600 +

Whether you’re looking forward to the Boardwalk Sand on Whyte festival or just bought your tickets for Edmonton’s Folk Music Festival, summer is the perfect season to stand out in a crowd with your personalized festival outfits. The culture of style at festivals is ever-evolving, although one staple will forever remain the same: be yourself. Embracing individuality and expressing it through your own style is part of the celebration, and it’s the only thing you need to become a festival fashion queen! We have our top festival picks listed here, but we hope you’ll take the inspiration and run with it to achieve your own unique style. Floral Fabulousness We love seeing 2-piece sets in style, like this adorable Floral High-Rise Palazzo Pant and matching Floral Front-Knot Ruffle Cropped Blouse from Urban Planet. Available in three floral print colour schemes, this stretchy wide-leg outfit is the perfect way to alert the world of your arrival. Comfort and Style in One Pair your floral outfit with stylish shoes that don’t compromise your comfort. There is nothing worse than blisters on a full day outdoors, so we recommend Naturalizer’s Abbott sandals in black. Bold and Flirty Accessories Accessorizing a festival outfit might be as important as the outfit itself. Complementing your feminine floral frock, consider a bold choker like this BCBGeneration Crystal Ring Choker from Hudson’s Bay, and these flirty Minicci’s Tassle Drop Earrings from Payless Shoesource. Hats On to Fashionable Festivals Top it all off with a Brixton Taupe Wesley Fedora from Simons, which will look amazing while also keeping you cool and free from sunburns. Looking Cool in Light Denim It might be summer, but it’s still Alberta. Make sure you stay warm through the night by bringing along a boyfriend-fit denim jacket. This light denim dream can be found at Bluenotes. And now all you’ll have to do is pack your sunscreen, selfie stick, and best friends for an amazing summer of festivals!

Summer Fashion From Day to Night with Kari Skelton

2018-06-04 00:00:00 -0600 +

Getting ready to go out takes a little longer these days. Like many of you parents, I'm usually doing my hair and trying stuff on while our little guy plays with toys or watches a show a few feet away. So, I'm always looking for any way to cut down on primping time. Having a daytime look that can easily transform into evening wear is golden. Whether or not you're a parent, I wanted to share seven simple ways you can create a super-chic #ootn from what you've worn all day (Of course, a lot of it depends on what your day looks like and what sort of plans you have for the evening). Basic is Best Keep it basic - I like to wear simple, casual pieces (think chambray romper, cotton jumpsuit, or dress) as my base, and use my shoes and other accessories to play. Shoe Swap Change your shoes - Simply switch out your casual footwear for something with a little more sass. Maybe you're wearing slides or flats for the day; add a heeled mule or pointed-toe pumps for the evening. Bag It Up, Babe Swap Your Bag - Even though your go-to day bag may have squeezy packs and wipes in it, that doesn't mean it shouldn't look great. Your daytime summer outfit can look instantly stylish with a fabulous canvas tote. Change over to an oversized clutch for the evening. If you're really pressed for time, you can even have your clutch packed and ready inside your tote to save a few precious minutes swapping over (while you're trying to get out the door to make that dinner reso)! You Really Are a Gem Step up your jewellery game - I have to keep my jewellery simple during the day. I've had a dangly earring yanked on by a toddler and it does not feel good! I usually wear studs and a simple necklace for daytime, and then if I'm going out, I add statement, sparkle, or both. I also look for pieces that are versatile, saving me both time and money. I have a few pairs of 2-in-1 earrings that can be worn as statement chandeliers for the evening or as studs through the day. Step It Up with Structure Switch your jacket - Perhaps you're wearing a light-weight cardigan over your cotton dress while you're running your errands. For nighttime, add a structured blazer for sophistication or cropped moto faux leather jacket for some edge. Tamed Tresses Hair - If you don't have time to do your hair, or it's in rough shape from the day you've had, consider adding a stylish hat to your evening look, and wear your hair in a low knotted bun. You'll instantly look pulled together even if your hair's a disaster under the hat. If you don't have a hat that works with your outfit, dry shampoo and a top knot will do! The goal is to look polished, not like you've been put through the ringer. A Dash of the Dramatics Makeup - Keep makeup basic for the day and either add a brighter lip or more dramatic eye for evening. Even if you don't have time to do your full face before your evening out, at least you have that something extra to add some pizzazz. Here are the two looks I put together while shopping at Londonderry Mall, using a chambray romper as a base piece. Shop Kari’s Daytime Look: Lyocell romper by Mavi Jeans at Simons River Knit Cardigan by twik at Simons Tassel Straw Double Handle Tote by Sondra Roberts Squared at The Bay Haiella Sandals at Call It Spring Cats 5000 Classic Sunglasses by Rayban & Gold-Accent Panama Hat at Simons Nighttime Look Lyocell romper by Mavi Jeans at Simons Techno Crepe Fitted Jacket by Contemporaine at Simons Rose Gold Tassel Hoop Earrings, West Village Watch by Rosefield & Colourful Straw Clutch by Street Level at Simons Ocalide Sandals at Spring For more style tips follow Kari Skelton on Instagram and at KariSkelton.com.

Road Trip Ready: Five Must-Haves Before You Hit the Highway

2018-05-21 00:00:00 -0600 +

Weekend road trips are inevitable as the hot summer weather continues to move in, and we are beyond excited. But before you jump in the car with the windows down, music turned up, and breeze in your hair, make sure you have these essentials for an unforgettable trip. Road Trip Worthy Style What is an amazing road trip without a comfortable outfit on? Sitting for long periods of time means comfort cannot be sacrificed, but we wouldn’t sacrifice style either. Ardene has you covered in these adorable crochet tassel shorts in a soft summery pink. Pair them with a white tee or crop top and you’ve entered the bliss of road trip style and comfort. Roadside Selfie Slips A road trip wouldn’t be very fun unless there were plenty of impromptu stops along the way. Don’t waste time putting on and taking off shoes with laces or buckles. Instead, slip in and out of the car in these Cushion Bounce Slide sandals from Boathouse so you don’t miss a minute, or, the opportunity for a quick roadside selfie. Sunshine Approved Style The summer sun is bound to show up on your road trip, so be prepared with these Mirrored Cat-Eye sunglasses from Le Chateau to block the rays and catch all the views. A Roomy Road Trip Travelling light with Roots 73 Weekend Bag will help keep your road warrior vehicle roomy for you and all your friends. Besides, there isn’t much to pack aside from shorts, bathing suits and a sunny disposition, right? Although it is available at Bentley in multiple colours, we are loving it in denim blue. Prepared for Everywhere Lastly, nothing makes more sense than a road trip with a stylish travel kit. Simon’s Shimmery Touch Travel Set includes a passport case with multiple slots for cards and bills, a luggage tag with ID card, and most importantly, a portable charger with 3-in-1 charging cord (compatible with iPhone, Android, and Galaxy devices) so you don’t miss a beat with your Instagram road trip Stories.

Mom is one of the most beautiful souls you know. There’s really no doubt about that. Every year, you search for a great gift that matches that beauty. Tips for Bringing the Indoors Out

2018-04-23 00:00:00 -0600 +

It’s hard to believe we’re over halfway out of April and there’s still snow in the forecast, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon all hopes of spending a little time outdoors this spring. As Albertans we thrive outside. We are the first on patios when the seats are clear of snow and we’re out walking in nature even before we break out of negative temps. In anticipation of that warmer weather, however, you’ll want to be prepared to take advantage of your own outdoor spaces at home. Bringing an indoor feel to your outdoor spaces continues to reign supreme as the trend for exterior design. Here are five ways you can get ahead of the warm weather and create an outdoor space that will turn you into a backyard homebody. Floor Plan Just like your living room or dining spaces, you’re not just going to let your outdoor furniture rest where it lands. Consider the type of entertaining you’ll be doing and whether you need different zones within the space. If you’re planning big BBQs, you’ll want to consider a large dining set where people can come together. Maybe you’re looking for a more casual oasis where you can spend time with friends over a few tropical drinks — a sectional lounge set will create an instant living room feel. Just because you’re outdoors does not mean you have to default to wicker. Instead, consider powder-coated aluminum sets like this Hampton lounge set from Hudson’s Bay. The Sunbrella material used on the cushions is designed for outdoor use but has a luxurious indoor feel. Textiles Your seat cushions, throw pillows, towels, poufs, umbrellas, and even rugs are an easy way to draw your interior style out. It’s spring, so look for bold graphic prints — zig zags, stripes, paisleys. The more exciting the pattern, the easier it will be to distract from any outdoor spills or mishaps. UV-resistant materials such as the weave used for this Nomad-stripes patio rug from Simons will ensure use for years to come. Colour Your outdoor colour palette should complement your indoor style. On a nice day, grab some of your indoor textiles and accessories and see how they fit in your outdoor space. If they’re not weather resistant or hardy, hunt down sun and water-resistant twins and keep the colours in mind as you shop for all of your other accessories. Accessories Outdoor design is far more than an outdoor patio set and a picnic table. Accessories like lanterns, dishes, planters and even graphic tiles can give a heightened feeling outside. Just like your textiles, don’t be afraid to go bold with colour and scale, but do consider the look and feel of your home. Ultra-modern accessories will start to look strange outside of a 1950’s bungalow. This Botanic Lantern from Stokes, however, would look great in anyone’s backyard. Shade We’ve all missed the sun dearly, but sometimes it can be a little too much if you’re spending as much time outside as you will be. When thinking about furniture placement, consider any natural shade from surrounding trees or plants. Does your space get southern exposure? Lucky you, but you might want to consider adding some of your own shade with an umbrella, so no one need be blinded by the light at your next garden party.

5 At-Home Masks for Fresh Spring Skin

2018-04-09 00:00:00 -0600 +

It’s time to stop hiding behind scarfs and balaclavas — spring is here! While spring cleaning might evoke thoughts of clearing downspouts or deep-cleaning our homes, we should also take time to focus on an area that faced a lot of hardships during the winter months: our face. While our skin is battered by harsh winds during the winter, it faces the added layer of sweat and dirt created by outdoor activities in the spring. We’ve found five at-home face masks that will give you a radiant and healthy glow to match the spring sun. Face Sheet Masks from Bath & Body Works These sheet masks are an inexpensive way to target various skin issues. The Keep It Fruity mask will brighten skin while the Cool As Cucumber will be a welcome relief after toiling in the garden. Available in six varieties, you can mix and match these masks to fit your individual needs. Now European Clay Powder from GNC This clay powder from GNC can be mixed with water and customized to your specific skin type making it an ideal mask for any skin type. Do you have dry skin? Mix in a few drops of lavender essential oils for maximum effect. Oily skin? This clay is all you’ll need. Either way, the European Clay Powder will draw out impurities from pores and remove dead skin and dirt from under the skin. Seaweed Oil Balancing Clay Mask from The Body Shop Oily skin and warm weather are not a wonderful match. Dry air is swapped out for humidity and sweat works with oil to block pores. The Seaweed Oil Balancing Mask clarifies and refreshes, leaving skin feeling fresh and revitalized. It’s great for anyone with oily or combination skin. KNESKO SKIN Nanogold Repair Sheet Mask from Hudson’s Bay After this winter your skin deserves nothing less than gold. If your skin didn’t make it out of the winter unscathed, this facial mask combines24K gold and collagen to heal and repair. The KNESKO SKIN Nanogold mask uses tiny particles of colloidal gold to firm, lift, hydrate and reduce redness and puffiness. Radiance Renewing Peeling Gel from ERA Ageless While you should be swapping out cream moisturizers for lighter alternatives, the goal for spring isn’t to dry out the dermis. The Radiance Renewing Peeling Gel from ERA Ageless is a deep cleansing option that will help uncover a fresh complexion without drying out your skin.

2018-01-22 00:00:00 -0700 +

Next Sunday, February 4th, the Philadelphia Eagles will face the New England Patriots. Hello, Super Bowl 2018! If all goes well for the Patriots, this could be Tom Brady’s sixth Super Bowl win (thanks, Google). Ok, we don’t know a lot about football, but we do know how to throw a good party. Plus, we don’t mind watching the players, and the event is usually super fun. You’re surrounded by friends, family, good vibes and great food. Hosting can be a stressful and costly time, so we’re here to help you make it a lot easier. One stop to Londonderry and you’ll be party ready! The Food Hosting a vegetarian? A&W Onion rings, fries, and sweet potato fries. Nobody will be complainingabout this carb-heavy selection. Meat lovers? KFC There’s a meal size for every crowd. Check out their mixed bucket meals or original bucket feasts. Popcorn chicken is addictive, and we bet your crowd will love it. Snack lovers? Shoppers Drug Mart Chips, dips, popcorn, chocolate, candy, frozen pizzas, frozen apps; the options are limitless here. The Décor Dollarama & Dollar Tree. Grab plates, napkins and cutlery that match your teams’ colours (no dishes for this gal) streamers and balloons. The Outfit Whether you want to invest and grab your teams’ jersey, or you just want a t-shirt to wear to bed at night (and to this party), Foot Locker has you covered. If you really want to get into the occasion, lather on the classic football eye black. Face paint works here. If you don’t have a stick of your own, Dollarama & Dollar Treeor Spencers can help! Wear a little extra luck underneath! We love these cute undies from La Senza. Remember, navy for the Patriots and teal for the Eagles. ViewHERE ViewHERE

7 Trendy Costumes For 2017

2017-10-19 00:00:00 -0600 +

Halloween is right around the corner and whether you like dressing up or not, you’ve probably gotten at least one invite to a costume party. And there’s always that yearly battle – do you avoid or embrace the expected costumes of the year? In our mind, it’s your choice and costumes can be as simple or as complicated, as popular or as unpopular as you want them to be. To help you discover what’s out there this year, we’ve got a list of the best head-to-toe costumes and accessories to find at Londonderry. Wonder Woman Who wouldn’t want to dress up as a beautiful Amazonian woman? Even though it is undoubtedly going to be one of the most popular costumes of the year, we advocate for as many girls and ladies possible letting their inner warrior loose. Shop for all things Wonder Woman at Spencer’s Gifts. Pennywise from It You might terrify anyone with a clown phobia but hey – it’s Halloween, right? Get your wig and face paint from Spencer’s and a frilly number of your mom’s from the 80’s and you’ll be set! Josie (or one of her Pussycats) from Riverdale All you need is a set of cat ears from Claire’s and you’re basically good to go. Just remember the Pussycats have their fair share of sass so make sure your outfit has a little somethin’ somethin’. A character from Beauty and the Beast Of course, Belle is the obvious choice, but there are so many other supporting characters to consider like Lumiere, Mrs Potts or our favourite, Fifi the feather duster! Claire’s has all the glitter and fluff you need to create this costume. 90’s Baywatch With the recent not-so-great remake (The Rock is no Hasselhoff), there are tons of Baywatch options out there for girls and guys. Spencer’s has the best selection of classic his and her red uniforms. Stranger Things With the second season of Stranger Things coming out soon, you’d get our vote for timeliness with a costume inspired by the show. The best part of this costume is that you can find bits and pieces from so many stores. But, whatever you choose to do, don’t forget your Demogorgon. *Keychain from Spencer's Gifts Animal Onesies One of the easiest costumes of all is an animal onesie with just one zip to get the job done. Between Spencer’s Gifts, Ardene and Urban Planet, you’ll surely find your matchingspirit animal somewhere.

Quick & Easy Recipes to be Thankful For

2017-10-05 00:00:00 -0600 +

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all that we’ve been blessed with in life and often includes our loved ones, successes throughout the year and more. But you know what we’re also thankful for? Potlucks. Whoever made it kosher to do Thanksgiving dinner potluck style deserves a free turkey. For some, there’s nothing more stressful than having to cook a huge feast for five, ten or fifteen plus people. So in celebration of Thanksgiving coming up this weekend, here are a few recipes that are stress-free, allow time for binge-watching Riverdale, and will still put family and friends in a food coma. 1. Feature Drink – Pumpkin Spice Whisky Cocktails For any hostess looking to spice things up this Thanksgiving dinner with something different, try a PSW. With the majority of ingredients being pantry staples like nutmeg and cinnamon, this stovetop cocktail will easily become a seasonal favourite. http://dishingupthedirt.com/recipes/pumpkin-spice-whisky-cocktails-giveaway/?utm_campaign=yummly&utm_medium=yummly&utm_source=yummly 2. Appetizer - Deviled Eggs For all you not-so-master-chefs out there, here’s an idea that is low cost, low maintenance but high in popularity – deviled eggs. With four ingredients and two easy steps, you’ll want to claim first dibs on preparing a starter dish. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/15368/deviled-eggs-i/?internalSource=hub%20recipe&referringId=16861&referringContentType=recipe%20hub&clickId=cardslot%20 3. Main - Slow-Cooker Scalloped Potatoes Pull your stretchy denim out of the closet because this recipe is creamy, cheesy and everything you want on Thanksgiving Day. Tossing the ingredients in the crockpot is easy, holding back from two, three, or dare we say four servings is the hard part. http://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a52475/slow-cooker-scalloped-potatoes-recipe/ 4. Side - Pull-apart Garlic Rolls Is using pre-made refrigerated biscuit dough cheating? Who cares if it’s delicious! And that’s exactly how this recipe tastes. Set aside five to ten minutes for prepping and 15 to cook, and you’ll be golden – well at least your dinner rolls will be. https://tasty.co/recipe/pull-apart-garlic-roll 5. Dessert - Caramel Apple Cheesecake This is the cherry on top “go out with a bang” kind of dessert. This caramel apple cheesecake combines all the great fall flavours to make one sweet satisfactory dish. PARKSHOP Comes To Londonderry!

2017-08-17 00:00:00 -0600 +

Yep, you heard that right, PARKSHOP is opening its doors this Saturday, August 19, 2017 and they have some very exciting things going on in store! To put it simply, PARKSHOP is a curated collection of trend pieces, Canadian fashion brands and artisans. It is one of eight new Shop Canada Runway retailers to open this month. The grand opening event will take place on Saturday from 2-4PM in our new fashion wing and food court. Shoppers will enjoy unique presentations and exclusive shopping deals from the first ever PARKSHOP and Adesso Accessories stores! Be sure to follow PARKSHOP on Instagram at @ourparkshop to keep updated on the latest products and events taking place in store! To learn more about its co-founders Kara Chomistek and Jessie Li, keep reading! #OURPARKYEG #PARKSHOP #ShopCanada ----- By 2008, Jessie Li and Kara Chomistek had grown tired of watching talented friends move away from Alberta. At that time, aspiring artists and fashion designers had to move to biggercentres to pursue their careers. “There was no industry for fashion here,” Li says. “There was no community for it.” But where others saw limitations, Li and Chomistek saw an opportunity. The two Calgarians launched PARKSALE, an outdoor market for young artists and fashion designers. Barely a decade later, that small market has become a thriving fashion and lifestyle non-profit, with Chomistek as president and Li as vice-president. The team runs PARKSALE annually, as well as biannual fashion shows PARKSHOW and PARKLUXE. They’ve hosted pop-up shops at West Edmonton Mall and Calgary’s Chinook Centre, and now they’re trying something new: PARKSHOP at Londonderry Mall. PARKSHOP is a curated collection of the most successful lines and standout pieces Li and Chomistek have seen over the last 10 years. “This is a really great opportunity for us to showcase Canadian designers,” Li says. More than half the store’s products are Canadian-designed, and of those products, 75 – 80% are seasonal collections from designers. The remaining 25 – 30% is PARK collaborations; these are products and designs Li and Chomistek have created in partnership with designers, including a popular SPBDAU PARK fanny pack, a collection of knits for Edmonton designer Malorie Urbanovitch and maybe even a PARK bomber jacket. There’s also a space in PARKSHOP for PARK CURATED, in which PARK’s featured designers assemble collections of theirfavourite international private label lines. Currently, PARKSHOP has collections curated by Malorie Urbanovitch and by Calgary jewellery designer Kate Hewko. It’s always been Li andChomistek’s goal to connect designers to consumers, and they’re excited to be nurturing that connection at a permanent venue—especially in an environment that shares their passion for local talent. “Londonderry has sought out some great Canadian businesses to be part of the centre,” Li says. “We love how community-oriented it is.”

Meet the makers, owners and designers behind each of the stores by reading a few shop teasers below. PARKSHOP Brought to you by the founders of PARKSALE,PARKSHOW and PARKLUXE, PARKSHOP is a curated collection of the most successful lines and standout pieces Calgary-based entrepreneurs Jessie Li and Kara Chomistek have seen over the last 10 years. Adesso Accessories Abdul Ahmed never intended to open a brick-and-mortar store. When the CEO and co-founder of Adesso Accessories launched his line of men’s products at adessoaccess.com in 2016, he and his business partners were trying to build a global e-commerce brand. But right now, Ahmed, along with co-founder and creative director Ayaz Raja and operations manager Lucas Anderson, are focused on building and serving their community. At the Adesso Accessories shop in Londonderry Mall, customers can touch and try on the full Adesso line, which includes neckwear, pocket squares, belts, cufflinks, jewellery, socks, and wallets. It’s an opulent, inviting space with earthy colours, a mix of modern and classic features, and polished concrete floors — the perfect showcase for Adesso’s bold, fun, European-inspired aesthetic. Step In Shoes Step In Shoes recently shifted locations within the mall, but it didn’t go far. It moved next door to its original Londonderry location, to a larger, purpose-designed space where owner Leona Paush can showcase her high-quality, trend-forward product line. Customers at Step In Shoes will find an extensive selection of Toms, as well as Lacoste, Merrell, Ecco, EmuAustralia and Birkenstocks. They’ll also find Manitobah Mukluks, an Indigenous-owned line of boots and moccasins, and Timberland styles - both brandsthat Paush brought into the store at the request of her customers. LemonDress Two years ago, Chinese designer Shijie Caitravelled to Italy for a meditation program and fell in love with a man she met there. She moved to Edmonton to marry her new beau, Iranian-Canadian Sina Khalilian. Together, they opened LemonDress. Cai and Khalilian’s new Londonderry boutique, which customers sometimes compare to boho retailer Anthropologie, has wooden racks hung with dresses, tunics,T-shirts and scarves. There’s a special section of gifts and accessories that Cai hand-selected from China, India, Nepal and Thailand, as well as women’s shoes and a line of Eastern- and Japanese-influenced cotton dresses for babies. Continental Fine Shoes With the help of his son Maurice, Chris Kalisa opened Continental Fine Shoes in Grande Prairie in 2015. Kalisa’s goal is to bring a curated line of affordable footwear all the way from Grande Prairie to Edmonton. Kalisa takes frequent international buying trips, choosing his shop’s entire product line based on quality and price. The first shoes Kalisa chose were genuine leather men’s dress shoes that sell for $125 a pair (or less). Next, he began to explore athletic shoes, winterboots and women’s shoes. Continental Fine Shoes now carries an immense range of everything from wedges and loafers to high tops and brogues. Customers will find more than 100 brands of men’s and women’s shoes including Viola, Marna, Sammy, Onelove, Paris and League, an athletic brand that’s new to North America but has a huge following in Europe. Moltisanti In Moltisanti at Londonderry Mall, shoppers will find a bright, airy space with a “shop within a shop” concept that gives each brand its own dedicated space, including an amazing selection of Canadian designers. The layout was inspired by visits owner and president Neeraj Nikhanj made to iconic high fashion men’s stores in New York, Las Vegas and Toronto. “We feel it’s essential to represent each designer by having a dedicated section of our store for each brand,” Nikhanj says. “It’s very easy to find what you’re looking for.” And he’s thought of everything—there’s even a lounge area where shoppers’ companions can relax. KellyWollf The new, 2,500-sq.-ft. KellyWollf store at Londonderry is an extension of owner and designer Kelly Campbell’s personal style. It has a simple, Scandinavian aesthetic—all whites and metallics—with fixtures hanging from the ceiling for an airy, rack-free feel. “It reflects what I’m inspired by,” Campbell says. She carries menswear and children’s clothing as well as women’s fashion, offering an eclectic range of items and price points, from $10 tops to $2000 suits. “You can buy your ball gown and you can buy sneakers. And you can wear the two together if that’s your style,” Campbell says. Opulence Zoul Choucair describes Opulence as a “one-stop shop for the modern man,” and he’s not exaggerating. The shop’s Londonderry Mall location is a mini department store where men can find a range of designer clothing and accessories, from classic pieces to trendy, progressive street wear. Opulence carries a range of brands, from major international lines to local success stories, without compromising on quality. The shop includes big hitters like Hugo Boss, Versace, Bikkembergs and John Varvatos; denim from Rock Revival,Fidelity and True Religion; and leading Canadian brands like MooseKnuckles, Kollar and Kuwalla Tee. Sunglasses 101: The Best Styles For Your Face Shape

2017-05-06 00:00:00 -0600 +

One accessory that’s often overlooked for both function and fashion are sunglasses. Sunglasses do much more than protect our eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays. They make an important statement about our style, they prevent fine eye lines and wrinkles, they allow you to people watch without being creepy, and they even hide our appearance after a night of debauchery. Because you can wear sunglasses for many reasons and many seasons, it’s important to invest in a pair that is suited to your face shape. While you might think any pair of sunglasses will do the trick, just like denim, there are some styles that are more flattering than others. So, rather than risk a major style mistake and end up looking bug-eyed or like a blast from the past, let us help you find the perfect pair for your face shape using our curated short list. 1. Heart-shaped face Someone with a heart-shaped face has a wider forehead and a significantly narrower chin. For this shape, it’s best to have your sunglasses mimic your face shape, and the perfect pair to do the trick is Aviators. If you have more delicate facial features, you’re going to want to stick to thinner frames, however, if your features are more dramatic, pick frames that are bigger and bolder. Your sunglasses should make a statement, just like you do! 2. Round face Unlike the heart-shaped face, those with a round face are going to want to wear sunglasses that contrast their face shape. In fact, round, circular sunglasses should be avoided at all costs. Styles that work best for this face shape are wayfarers or square frames. In this case, the phrase “square peg, round hole” makes the perfect match. 3. Square face Just like round-shaped faces should wear square frames, square-shaped faces should wear round frames. But when it comes to your sunnies, size does matter! So if you have a larger face, bigger frames are better, and if you have a smaller face, opt for a slimmer frame. Remember, proportion is the key to style success. 4. Oval face For those with an oval face shape, you’ve hit the sunglasses jackpot. Most styles work for your face shape, making your opportunities endless. However, one style that you should consider sporting poolside are the fashion forward cat eyes. You’ll have everyone thinking “meow”. Whether you’re an early bird prepping for an epic summer ahead or just in major need of an overhaul in the shade department, make sure you keep these tips in mind before you slip on your next pair of sunglasses. We promise, you’ll go from fumbling to fab, real quick. Shop for the best sunglass styles at Winners, Hudsons Bay, The Eyewear Place and Call it Spring! Reference links: Allure

Five Spring Closet Cleaning Tricks

2017-04-06 00:00:00 -0600 +

Spring is finally upon us and with the changing of the seasons it’s the perfect time for a “spring-clean” to start fresh! While we shake the winter dust from our yards, cars and homes, it’s just as important to take a stab at our closets. While the task can seem daunting and unappealing (trust us, we get it!), the rewards are worth all the time, effort and style questioning when you pull out that sequined skirt or shoulder-padded blazer. With these simple closet-cleaning tricks, your closet will get the makeover it deserves and you’ll never have to utter those five little words again – “I have nothing to wear”. Well, at least until next season anyway. ;) 1. Pull out everything from your closet And when we say everything, we mean everything. Not only is it important to start fresh for organizational purposes, it’s just as important to see everything that you own. By starting with an empty closet, you can consciously choose what items you want to put back into it and what items don’t make the cut. If possible, try and empty your closet out onto your bed. This way, you absolutely have to finish dealing with your closet before your head hits your pillow. 2. Grab four bins When cleaning out your closet, you’ll need four bins on hand. The first bin is for all your wardrobe items that you’re looking to keep, but simply need storing – think your heavy wool knits, winter jackets and accessories like a toque or faux fur stole. There’s no point in keeping these items in your day-to-day closet, as they just take up space and make it harder for your spring items to shine. The second bin is for items you are looking to donate. Donated items include: out of style clothing, items you can’t sell, non-damaged or discoloured garments, and anything that is not underwear. The third bin is for any items that need repairing or special laundering. However, it’s only reserved for clothes that you will actually fix or dry clean. If this item has sat in your repair pile for months with no attention given, it’s time to give it the heave-ho! The last bin is for any items that you no longer want and don’t meet the criteria for donation. For these garments, follow N’SYNC’s lead and say ‘bye, bye, bye!’ 3. Ask the tough questions Before placing any items back in your closet, you need to have a real talk with your clothes. By asking yourself these hard questions, you know what you really need to let go and what is worth holding on to. Here are the tough questions you need to ask yourself before placing an item back in your closet: Does it still fit? Have I worn it in the last 12 months? Would I wear it again? Do I love the way it looks on me? And most importantly, “If I saw it in a store now, would I buy it?” If you can answer yes to all of the above questions, then your garment has definitely earned its place in your wardrobe. If you answered no to any of the above questions, you know it’s time to part ways. 4. Reverse hang Now that you’ve sorted out your bins and asked the tough questions, your next step in closet cleaning is to put the garments you want to keep back in your closet. While this seems like a simple task, you need to be strategic. When hanging all your clothes back in your closet, make sure you reverse hang your hangers so that they face you. Every time you wear an item make sure you hang it back up in the closet facing away from you. By following this strategy, the next time you go to clean out your closet you’ll have an accurate idea of the garments you wear and the garments you don’t. At the end of the season, any hangers that are still facing you, you know have to go. 5. Be creative Now that the elimination phase is over, the last step in closet cleaning is getting creative with how you choose to organize your clothes. Some tips and tricks include: Organizing by colour palette Organizing by clothing category (i.e. work attire, weekend wear, workout clothing, etc.) Using dividers in tight spaces such as your underwear drawer, your sweater shelf, etc. Maximizing untapped space (i.e. hanging an over-the-door shoe bag on your closet door, putting your shoes underneath your clothes to make the most of floor space, etc.) However you choose to organize your closet, make sure that it makes sense to you. While Pinterest offers amazing inspiration, ultimately only you know how to best organize your spring wardrobe so that you can dress for success. When cleaning out your closet this spring, keep Londonderry in mind. Winners and Dollarama are must-stop shops for anything related to closet organization – from hangers to storage baskets and bins. And once you’re done all your closet cleaning, we’ve got everything you need to get your wardrobe spring fresh!

2017-03-16 00:00:00 -0600 +

After enduring what has felt like the longest winter ever, spring is finally just around the corner. While the weather still might rear its ugly head, we no longer have to wait to shop the latest spring fashions– especially with our Rotating Rack: Spring Edition events held all throughout the month. Curated by local style experts, we’re giving you the chance to preview the most exclusive spring styles and trends right off the rack. From minimalism to floral to athleisure and flouncy fresh, you can get all the style inspiration you need by visiting the Rotating Rack on Saturdays March 18 and 25 from 12- 3 p.m. in the East Court. To give you a taste of what to expect, we’ve outlined the top six spring 2017 trends you can expect to see and wear all season long. 1. Athleisure For the past few seasons now, athleisure has ruled the runway and this season is no different. You can expect to continue to see baseball caps, leggings, sliders and crop tops taking over the streets and your Instagram feeds. Athleisure is no longer restricted to your gym visits – instead this trend is perfect for an afternoon brunch with your girlfriends or a coffee date with your man. Not only will you be comfortable from dawn until dusk, but you’ll look just as chic too. 2. Minimalism You heard the phrase “less is more” a thousand times before, but when it comes to the minimalism trend the phrase couldn’t ring more true. This trend is all about going back to the basics. Whether that includes wearing classics like a little white tee or black leather jacket, or simply dressing head to toe in one colour palette is up to you. However, in order to nail this look you need to be willing to shed loud patterns and bold colours and let your minimalist clothes to the talking. Trust us, they’re giving everyone major fashion envy. 3. Flora Botanica April showers may bring May flowers, but when it comes to the fashion scene, floral is already in full bloom. Unlike other seasons where bright flowers rule, spring 2017 floral is much more subdued – think blushes, sage greens and white palm leaves. Flora Botanica is the perfect look to freshen up any spring wardrobe and make your closet feel anew. 4. Desert Sand The desert is known for its scorching hot climate, and the desert sand vibe on the fashion runway is just as hot. From tan trenches to camel joggers and taupe boots, the neutral shades are everywhere – but seriously. Regardless of your skin tone, you can always find a shade that works for you. The only hard part will be stopping yourself from buying everything you see in your complimentary camel colour. 5. Weekend Casual While the word ‘weekend’ is in the title, the looks associated with this trend aren’t simply reserved for Saturday and Sunday. From striped tees to light knits and denim, these pieces can easily transition into your weekday wardrobe. By pairing a t-shirt under a blazer or adding a blouse and heels to your denim you can effortlessly nail your business casual dress code. However, some of the pieces you’ll find on the Rotating Rack are definitely meant for your weekend escapades, but we promise whatever day of the week you wear this trend your outfit will be on point. 6. Flouncy Fresh You may hear the words ‘flouncy fresh’ and wonder what the heck that means. This trend is all about the little details. From ruffled off-the-shoulder tops, to pleated skirts and fringe earrings, this look is light, airy and cool. This feminine trend is the perfect match to spring’s easy, breezy climate and makes dressing for the season much, more exciting. Whether you choose to add floral patterns to your wardrobe or stick to minimalist basics, the Rotating Rack: Spring Edition will equip you will everything you need to have an #ootd worthy spring. Be sure to stop by the East Court on Saturday March 18 and 25 from 12-3 p.m. We promise the only regret you’ll have is not having more room in your closet.

Five Tips From The Tailor

2017-03-02 00:00:00 -0700 +

It’s time to set the record straight, clothing you find in stores today was not made to fit you. Instead, garments are made based on the size of the company’s fit model and are then mass-produced with the expectation that the items will fit us all perfectly too. Unfortunately, this is not a realistic goal, as we all have different shapes and sizes. However, this point doesn’t translate well into the fitting room when you’re on your 14th pair of jeans. Instead, you leave the store feeling frustrated thinking that you’ll never find clothes that fit you ever again. But, the time to fight for better fitting clothing has arrived! Whether you’ve purchased a new blazer, or need to re-work a pair of old dress pants, Best Fit Tailor and Londonderry Tailor can guide you on the path to the perfect fit for you. Yes, you. In case you’re unaware of the magic behind the tailor’s machine, we’ve outlined five simple alterations for a better fit that won’t break the bank, but will have you looking oh-so-fine. 1. Cinch it in One of the easiest alterations to make is taking an item in at the waist. While the tailor’s work is simple, the difference it makes on your garment is huge. So instead of wearing a boxy dress or shapeless blazer, get your tailor to cinch the waist, and voila, your garment and body is transformed. 2. Alter those arms Not only can tailors adjust the width of a sleeve that’s way too wide, but they can also open a tight armhole to allow more room. So rather than having a garment restrict your arm’s range of motion (guilty!), one trip to the tailor will have you breathing and moving much more easy. You can thank us later. 3. Pass on the pleats Have a pair of dress pants in your closet that you absolutely adore, but the pleats on the pants are no longer doing you any favours? We feel you. All you need to do is talk to your tailor and he or she can remove your pleats and have your pants looking much more sleek and you looking show stopping. 4. Zip it up Adding or replacing a zipper is an easy addition to any dress that you’re struggling to get into or winter jacket that’s been around for too many seasons to count. This quick fix makes a big difference on almost any item in your wardrobe. 5. New neckline Got a neckline that’s not doing you any justice? Instead of tossing that item aside, work with a tailor to restyle the neckline. From removing a collar to transforming a crewneck into a boatneck, they can do just about anything. Keep these tricks in mind the next time you’re about to throw out an old pair of dress pants that aren’t quite the current style or pass up a stunning blouse that needs a minor nip, tuck. With hundreds of unique alteration services offered at Londonderry Tailor and Best Fit Tailor, they can help you create custom pieces fit perfectly for you – not the fit model.

The Perfect Pairing

2017-02-16 00:00:00 -0700 +

If you were the recipient of one or two boxes of chocolates this Valentine’s Day, or let’s be honest, you bought all the left over chocolate on sale, have we got the perfect pairing for you. It’s not revolutionary, but we couldn’t think of a better combo than chocolate and wine – and best yet – we’ve got step-by-step instructions for you to conduct your own personal at home tasting. So, if you want to know the general tasting rules before you break them, keep on reading – we promise your mouth will be watering by the end. There are three key points to keep in mind when planning your tasting: 1. Your wine should always be sweeter than your chocolate. For instance, if you paired a milk chocolate with red wine, the red wine will overpower the subtle notes of the creamy, milk chocolate. 2. Pair chocolate and wine according to colour: The darker the chocolate, the darker the wine. 3. Try to match the smoothness and full-body flavours of the wine to the chocolate. You’re looking to match the intensities with this one. The higher the cocoa content, the more intense the flavour, and therefore, a heavier bodied wine is required. After you’ve got the chocolate and perfect wine to match, consider the following steps courtesy of the experts at Purdy’s as you tantalize your taste buds: 1. Always taste the wine first. Chocolate contains cocoa butter that coats the inside of your mouth and masks the flavour of the wine. 2. Before tasting the wine, check its colour and clarity. 3. Swirl the wine in the glass. This helps to release the aroma of the wine and give you an indication of alcohol content. 4. How is the aroma of the wine: fruity, floral, herby or oaky? 5. Take a sip. How does the body of the wine feel, thin or heavy? 6.Evaluate the tannins: Is there a puckering sensation? Does the wine make your mouth feel dry? 7. Evaluate the acidity level of the wine. 8. Before the taste of the wine dissipates, taste your chocolate. When the unique flavours of the wine and chocolate marry together in your mouth, you’ve reached the “magic moment” for a truly sensational taste experience. If you can’t handle the temptation and you just want to dive right in, go ahead. Below is a cheat sheet of basic wines to pair with varying chocolate notes and ingredients. Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon: Pair with any solid dark Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Chilean chocolate, the classic Chocolate Truffle or the tasty Turona Pinot Noir, a Light Merlot or Cabernet: Kahlua, Ice Wine or Dark Chocolate Truffles Champagne or Rose: White Cameo Truffle or White Silk Chardonnay or Riesling: Hedgehog Minis, Grand Marnier or Goat Cheese and Chardonnay Truffles Pinot Grigio: Milk chocolate Haystacks with toasted almonds and plain or salted caramel Not a wine drinker? Never fear, Purdy’s has got you covered with a full list of chocolate and tea, or chocolate and cheese pairings. To read more click here. If you don’t have them already, pick up your tasting supplies from Purdy’s Chocolatier and the Liquor Depot at Londonderry.

Win A Trip To Reykjavik, Iceland

2016-11-18 00:00:00 -0700 +

Not many people have the chance to witness the elusive and magical northern lights up close. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, they are fickle in nature and depend on many variables in order to be visible – but with a little luck on your side – you’ll witness one of nature’s most incredible features! To shed some light – no pun intended – on how and why the northern lights come to life, it’s important to understand the scientific explanation. The northern lights are the result of electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing displays of bright, colourful dancing lights. These gorgeous hues of white, green, pink and purple are visible in the magnetic polar regions of the northern and southern hemispheres, but most famously in Iceland. This year we’re decking out the mall with a brand new, stunning northern lights holiday décor theme. To celebrate our theme, the season of giving and this special time of year, we’re giving away a trip for two lucky people to Reykjavik, Iceland. To enter, all you have to do is find the Londonderry North Star hidden throughout the mall and follow these simple steps: 1. Follow @londonderrymall on Instagram 2. Find and post a photo of the Londonderry North Star on Instagram, tag @londonderrymall and usethe hash tag #findthenorthstar 3. Stay tuned for clues posted on Twitter each day to help you find the Londonderry North Star The contest runs from November 26 to December 24. The Londonderry North Star will be hidden daily so you can enter multiple times to better your chances of winning! Good luck! Source: NorthernLightsIceland.com

The Quintessential Sport Coat

2016-11-03 00:00:00 -0600 +

Every man needs a classic sport coat in his closet. It’s one of the most versatile pieces that can be worn for various occasions and in many different ways. It’s like the male LBD, which everyone knows is an absolute staple. Tip Top Tailors has some amazing options and at very reasonable price points. The only thing more on trend than a polished sport coat, is one that’s also a sweet deal. See how we style one jacket for three different occasions using key pieces that should be in his closet. Lazy Sophistication – Pair the sport coat with a knit turtleneck or crewneck sweater, chinos and hiker style boots to create a cool, casual look. This outfit is perfect for Sunday brunch or a laid back gathering with friends. Suit Separates – Switch up the matching suit for coordinating separates. A nice pair of printed or plain dress pants and a crisp white dress shirt combined with your preferred neck accessory and sport coat will create an interesting, sophisticated office look. Happy Hour – Dress it down on a Friday afternoon with jeans and a tee for happy hour beers. To update this look, switch out the classic v-neck tee for a crew neck and add a fun pocket square! We like a heavier boot with this look to add some edge, because really, who didn’t love James Dean.

Faux Fur Fever

2016-10-21 00:00:00 -0600 +

We’ve already seen a few inches of snow hit the ground here in Edmonton and unfortunately, it’s not even winter yet! We figured that in order to be appropriately prepared for the next flash of flurries, it’s time to start thinking about cold weather accessories. This winter, don’t be afraid to go all out in the faux fur department. It’s cozy, cute and most importantly, warm. If you’re not already convinced, check out these furry finds available at various retailers throughout the mall! 1. Toques We love any and all toques with pompom toppers. You can find them made in knit fabrics, but we’re particularly fond of faux fur. Try this grey patterned knit and fur combo from Bootlegger. 2. Headbands If you’re not a fan of hat hair or often wear your hair up, try a headband instead. To keep your noggin warm in this neutral black band, visit Hudson’s Bay on the main level. 3. Neck stoles Perfect for wearing over a pea coat to the office or around your neck and shoulders for a night out on the town, a stole says “sophistication”. You can find similar styles to this one at Hudson’s Bay. 4. Mittens Scrape your windshield in style and keep those fingers from falling off in these adorable knit and fleecy fur mittens from Le Chateau. 5. Winter Boots Let’s be honest, a winter boot that falls short of the mid-calf does very little when we get a mountain of snow. So, if you’re looking for warm, practical options check out Payless Shoes. They’ve got several affordable UGG-like styles that hold heat and are comfortable for winter trekking.Looking to splurge?Check out the Australian brand EMU at Step In Shoes – warm, stylish and waterproof! 6. Pompom Key chains We haven’t quite figured out what prompted the pompom key chain trend – other than that they are incredibly cute – but you can find them at multiple retailers including Call it Spring and Bentley.

Thanksgiving Sweets – A Traditional Twist

2016-10-06 00:00:00 -0600 +

So you’ve been tasked with bringing dessert to dinner this weekend – which of course on Thanksgiving is usually some sort of pie (don’t worry, we’re not knocking pie) – but you feel like walking on the wild side and breaking tradition by bringing something new. If you fit in this category and have said a mental amen, check out these three recipes by Save On Foods that are traditional, with a twist. You may not have thought to look before, but if you’ve never checked out their website, it’s worth a mouth watering visit! 1. Apple Pear and Cranberry Crisp This is a quick and delicious recipe that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Easier than pie and slightly different than a crumble, an apple crisp is a great substitute for apple pie and yet satisfies the die-hards at dinner. With only 35 minutes cook time on the clock, you can pop it in the oven right after dinner and serve warm. Go the distance and bring a tub of vanilla ice cream to serve on the side. Click here for the full recipe! 2. Pumpkin Spice Cakes A good Thanksgiving feast never goes without a pumpkin dish. Try making these festive, flavourful cakes with a rich, cream cheese icing. Pumpkin pie can be a bit overwhelming to finicky eaters so this is a great option. If you have extras, leave a few without icing and eat them in the morning for a quick breakfast bite. For the full recipe, click here. 3. Salted Caramel Apple Galette Wow the crowd with essentially, an open-faced apple pie. This recipe requires a little extra prep time and a few key cooking tools on hand to get the job done right, but it’s not incredibly complicated! Serve this pan of gooey-goodness warm (or cold) with whipped cream on the side. Check out the full recipe listed here.

BEAUTY SOUNDBITE: FALL TRENDS

2016-09-29 00:00:00 -0600 +

Since we’ve been sharing our favourite fall fashions on Instagram, we felt inspired to fill you in on the top beauty trends setting the bar this season. Be warned, some are a throwback to styles we thought we’d never see again, but as the age old saying goes – what goes around comes around! Dark Rims Teetering on the fine line between glam and goth, the key to this look is keeping it clean. Of course you want to blend any black liner or shadow, but be sure to wipe away any residual dark makeup under the eye for a crisp final touch. Bold Berries It seems with every fall season comes a return to dark bold lips. Maybe standout lipsticks are too high maintenance in summer, or we’re just sick of baby pinks and peaches by the time fall rolls around. Either way, seize the opportunity to get your fill of rich berry hues. The more audacious the better! Chunky Lashes All hail Twiggy! The famous model is the face behind this revival. Thick lashes with voluminous mascara are a must, but if you’re brave enough to bunch them together, channel your inner supermodel to rock this doll-like look. Glitter Bombs Go nuts with glitter if you like to shine for a night out on the town! Whether it’s in your eye shadow, eyeliner, lip-gloss or spread across your cheeks, sparkles get the seal of approval this season. If you decide it’s too much, pack up your products and pull them back out again for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Rainbow Bright Neon colours sent shock wave across runaways this fall featuring every colour in the rainbow to achieve these electric looks. Take it or leave it, this trend is anticipated to carry through to winter and although there’s been a heavy emphasis on blue eye shadow, there’s no shortage of pink and yellow hues!

Over The Knee Or Over The Edge?

2016-09-15 00:00:00 -0600 +

When you see over the knee boots on the runway, of course you love them! They’re glamorous, celeb worthy but better yet, they make you feel like you have Amazonian length legs. The tricky thing is trying to figure out how to wear them everyday without crossing that invisible, but necessary line that dictates appropriateness. To help you navigate through the do’s and don’ts, we’ve got a few tips and tricks when wearing them to the office, on the weekend or in the evening. Office The critical thing to remember if wearing over the knee boots to the office is that your bare upper thigh should never be shown. We repeat – never. If you’re wearing them with hose and a dress it’s acceptable, but we recommend erring on the side of caution with thicker opaque tights. The best way to pull off this look in the office is with a knee length skirt – a-line, pencil, whatever – and a classic top like a structured button down or turtleneck. The boots have enough flair on their own that you don’t need to fear being boring! Casual Try them with a sweater dress and tights or jeans and an oversized cozy sweater. To keep it casual it’s important to counter any short hemlines with covered sleeves, scarves, cool jackets or a lower heel height. Also keep the jewelry and accessories simple. After all, these boots were made for walkin’! Evening At night you can show all the upper thigh that you like and quite frankly, bare leg is better. With a high neck or long sleeves, that little bit of skin will be subtle and sexy. Of course, they also work with a cute top, jeans or faux leather leggings immediately giving a rocker edge to your overall look. If you’re feeling confident and want to give them a try, check out the styles available at Call it Springand Payless Shoes.

Contouring: A Step-By-Step Guide

2016-08-18 00:00:00 -0600 +

The contouring makeup trend hit the beauty industry a few years ago making a major splash due to celebrity uptake – most notably popularized amongst the Kardashians. While celebrity and beauty expert support for this trend is strong, we view contouring as an amazing opportunity to keep that dewy, glowing, sun-tanned look long after the summer sun has faded away. As such, we’ve broken this tricky trend down to a step-by-step science, complete with answers to all the basic contouring questions you may have! What is contouring? The concept behind contouring is quite simple actually. By using dark and light colours toabsorb and bounce light, we can alter the appearance of someone's face to varying degrees. The perceived ideal face shape is oval and more often than not, peoplewill contour in order to createthat shape. Why do people contour? In addition to creating a specific face shape, people contour in order to sculpt their faces and create the illusion of specific areas beingsmaller and thinner, making other areas of the face look more pronounced and defined. The most common areas to contour are cheekbones, jaw-lines and noses. What do I use to contour? Wesuggest using a contour palette, which often includes a matte brown powder (contour shade), a bronzing powder (for softening and shimmer) and a matte light cream, yellow or white powder (highlighting shade). Check out the Shoppers Drug Mart cosmetics department for brands offering similar products! How do I contour? 1.Placement is key! When it comes to shaping your cheekbones, usethe top of your earand the corner of your mouth as a guide. Dip an angled brush into the matte brown contour shade and pack the colour rightunderthe highest point of your cheekbone. 2.Slightly blend the colour up into your temple and then (using directional blending) dragthe colour down towards the corner of your mouth (this will take 10-15 swipesdownward so be patient!). If you look head on into a mirror after this step, you will notice thatyour cheekbone looks lifted compared to theother one. 3.Take a fluffy blush brush and pop the bronze shade right on top of your contour toblend and bring some warmth back to your skin. 4.Next, take the lightest (yellow, cream or white) matte shade and place that ontopof your cheekbone and blend in towards your nose. This willmake the light bounce off your face and lift your cheekbone even further. 5.If you're looking for a simple contour you could stop at thispoint, but if you would like todefine your features even further, you can apply the contour shade onto the corners ofyour forehead and under the jawline, just be sure to push the contour colour behindyour ear to avoid any harsh lines. 6.Go back in with the bronze shade and layer it lightly on top of your contour shadesto add some shimmer tothose areas. 7.Lastly, sandwich the white highlight between your cheekand jawline, the center ofyour forehead, down the bridge of your nose and the center of your chin. Blend with a clean fluffy brush to finish the look. There you have it!Tried contouring before? Do you have any tips and tricks toshare? Excerpted fromVancitybuzz.com

Planning the Perfect Canada Day Party

2016-06-23 00:00:00 -0600 +

Everything you need for an afternoon of fun on July 1 As Canadians, we seem to look forward to long weekends more than most. It may be because of our long winters and short summers, or perhaps we just relish in the thought of getting that extra day off to spend with family and friends. Either way, it’s important we make the most of these coveted calendar days, especially during the summer when the opportunity for outdoor parties must be taken advantage of. So, whether it’s an annual afternoon BBQ or a Canadian themed cocktail affair, we’ve got great tips for hosting a patriotic party. Create a Canadian playlist For upbeat dance worthy tunes, curate a playlist full of Canada’s current pop stars including The Weeknd, Tegan & Sara, Drake and if you’re a Belieber, good old Justin. If your guests prefer the country variety, include the likes of Brett Kissel, Dallas Smith, George Canyon and of course, Shania. Come up with a signature cocktail This is a great opportunity to incorporate a little red and white décor without being too cheesy. Mix up a batch of Shirley Temples, strawberry margaritas or the beloved Canadian hangover cure, the Caesar. Plan some fun and games Try a game of trivia or Canadian themed charades, both of which will have your guests doubled over with laughter – because who doesn’t love a good impersonation of Eugene Levy. Decorate and celebrate To avoid the classic corny décor, try including red and white subtly like in a feature cocktail as mention above. A gingham printed tablecloth, white serving platters, theme colour dessert icing or coordinating flowers, candles or lanterns are also great ways to keep with your Canadian colour scheme.

Long Weekend Essentials: Everything you need for a fun filled weekend

2016-05-11 18:00:00 -0600 +

As you create your itinerary for the Victoria Day long weekend, there’s a few items that you should bring along for the ride, regardless of whether you’re planning to hang out inthe city, or head out to the country. We’re sharing our top recommendations on what pack when planning for the long weekend. A great read - There’s nothing like a good book on lazy days. We’ve got a few great recommendations that must make it on your summer reading list. Check out ‘The Girl On The Train’, soon to be a movie starring the lovely Emily Blunt. The suspenseful, mysterious thriller will keep you turning the pages all weekend long. If you’ve already read and enjoyed that one, take a stab at ‘All The Light We Cannot See’, equally as entertaining and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Stylish shades – The eternal optimists in us have to hope that it’s going to be beautiful and sunny all weekend. So, you need to be prepared and have a pair of stylish sunnies in your purse. Sunscreen – Remember to stay safe under the sun and bring sunscreen wherever you go. There’s no buzz kill like a brutal sunburn to ruin your weekend fun. Water bottle – Whether you’re sipping good ol’ H20 or even a long island iced tea, bring a water bottle and keep hydrated throughout the weekend. Water bottles by Swell keep cold liquids cold for up to 12 hours and hot liquids hot for up to 8 hours! A portable charger – Have no fear about missing an opportunity to use your selfie stick. Just make sure you pack a portable charger to carry with you and recharge your phone after you’ve gone a little photo crazy. The perfect tote – And finally, you need a big bag to carry all your other long weekend essentials. Try finding one made with an easy care fabric like canvas. This will allow you to simply throw your bag in the washer if it gets dirty from grass stains or smells from campfire smoke.

Transitioning Into Spring: Wardrobe Revamp

2016-04-27 18:00:00 -0600 +

It’s easy to get lost in the latest trends when transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring. However, there are a few simple guidelines that you can use to give your wardrobe a spring update year after year. Thesebasic, never-fail rulescan be adapted to incorporate the top trends, but it’s always important to have thebuilding blocks. Layer lightly– Whether it’s a light white cotton top and cardigan or a simple skirt with tights, layering is key to spring style. As the weather changes, so can you by adding to, or losing some of your layers. Graduate fromheavyweight– Ditch your heavyweight winter coat in favour of something mid-weight for those in between weather days. A cargo style jacket is the perfect spring basic that can be layered with a knit tunic and boots for cold days, or a silk tank and jeans for warm ones. Bold and bright– Incorporate the top seasonalcolourin some of your accessories. An easy way to do this is with a new bag or scarf. You will slowly saturate your closet with exciting colours, erasing the memory of those dreary winter days. Play with pattern–Start to add small bits of pattern intoyour wardrobe. You can do thiswith a new pair of floral ballerina flats or a printed blouse. Don’t bring out the full floral sundress just yet! It’s too early to be in full bloom when you might see a late winter frost. Knits–Source someknits for your closet to keep you warm on thoseearly spring days. Knits will serve several spring wardrobe purposes, as they are the perfect layering piece, they can include print and even a littlecolour!

Spring Cleaning, Home Edition

2016-04-17 18:00:00 -0600 +

Simple Tips for Seasonal Home Décor When it comes to interior décor, you’re home should change along with the seasons. Just like any spring closet cleaning, there are a few things that should be stowed away with the changing weather and swapped out for more current items. To show you, we’ve selected a few pieces from Stokes and Winners to give your home a fresh update without breaking the bank. Play with pattern In fall and winter, we tend to gravitate towards darker, neutral prints and thick, soft, wooly blankets. Springtime gives you the opportunity to brighten things up by bringing in fun patterns and lighter textures to make your home feel spacious and airy. This gorgeous floral printed pillow from Stokes brings an entirely new colour palette to your space, giving you lots of options when choosing other textiles. Warm hues Choose warm hues to center your design focus. Pull your favourite colour from a new pillowcase or throw, and coordinate it with the rest of the space by including a few accessories in that shade. Adding warmth will make the space feel bright, sunny and inviting. Remember, each item doesn’t need to match perfectly but you want to ensure the look is cohesive. A perfect example of this conceptis this pink cylinder from Stokes. Alternate artwork Switching out a few pieces of artwork is one of the easiest ways to make a notable difference in your space. It doesn’t need to be an entire photo collage, but selecting one or two new images to add to your collection will catch your eye every time you walk into the room. Flower power It’s spring after all so you absolutely need flowers. Whether it’s a $5 bundle of baby’s breath or a $25 bouquet of blooms, a little green goes a long way. If this is a budget buster, fake it 'tilyou make it with these faux flowers from Stokes. All about accessories Accessorizing is always important. Remove the pumpkin-spiced scented candles and heavy coffee table books in lieu of this gorgeous copper candleholder to freshen up any table topper.

ENTERTAINING WITH LONDONDERRY

2016-03-23 18:00:00 -0600 +

We love entertaining friends and family year round, whatever the occasion. From the Oscars to the Bachelor finale, we’ll make any excuse to gather our girls for a night of movie trivia or ‘after the final rose’ cheering (okay, maybe some jeering too). It’s inspired us to share some of our favourite party-tested and approved snacks to serve! Best news yet, you can find the ingredients at Londonderry’s Save On Foods. MUSHROOM WALNUT PESTO TART Step aside roasted tomato basil, there’s a new pesto in town! If you don’t want to make the tart, you can always use this pesto on pasta or spread over a crostini. Either way, you have to give this a try! BAKED LAVENDER CAMEMBERT Either Camembert or Brie cheese will work for this crowd-pleasing favourite. The floral hints of lavender compliment the saltiness of the cheese making it melt in your mouth. YOLOS AKA HOMEMADE ROLOS We’ve used the word ‘favourite’ a lot, but we’re going to take it up a notch when we tell you that your guests will be obsessed with this dessert! So much so that extra jars of Yolos tends to disappear from the freezer every time we have a soirée. LAVENDER LEMONADE Aside from its pretty colour, this is an incredibly refreshing drink to serve in summer or winter. It’s the perfect mocktail for guests who prefer to skip the bubbly, however we recommend keeping the champagne glasses for presentation purposes. ROSEMARY PARMESAN POPCORN One of the healthier treats you can offer your guests, this rosemary parmesan popcorn is flavoured with garlic-infused olive oil and sprinkled with Parmesan, freshly minced rosemary, garlic and finally, salt and black pepper. Need we say more? RICOTTA CROSTINIS Crostinis are the ultimate party food and the perfect blank canvas to show off both sweet and savory creations. The wonderful thing about this appetizer is thatfresh ricottacan be made a day ahead and we love the endless amount of flavor combinations! BRIE AND BLACKBERRY TARTS By now you can probably tell that we love cheese. This one is too easy to even consider it a recipe and shows that simple ingredients can make a very impressive appetizer!

2016-02-28 17:00:00 -0700 +

Forgo the expensive juicer, the overpriced pre-made juice, and make your own detox juice at home – with a blender. Forget the days of elbow grease and separating the pulp from juice. The right blender means you can whip up your own fresh juice super easily. And with a few months under our belts in 2016, it’s the perfect time for a reset on those healthy resolutions. So to inspire you, here’s our favorite green juice recipe. We scooped all the ingredients we needed fromSave On Foods. And if you're in the market for a blender, we're loving the fun colors of theseKitchenAid mixers spottedat The Bay. Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups water 2 cups kale 2 green apples, cored 1/2 cup parsley leaves 1 medium cucumber, quartered 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped 1 (1-inch) piece of ginger, peeled 2 Tablespoons lemon juice Directions: Add all of the ingredients into the blender jug in the order in which they are listed. Blend the ingredients on the highest level setting, such as "liquefy," until the juice is well-blended. (It will be the consistency of a smoothie.) If you want to enjoy the pulp with your juice, pour the mixture into glasses and serve. If you prefer a thinner consistency, pour the mixture through cheese cloth or a fine mesh sieve, and using a spatula, press the pulp into the sieve to extract as much liquid as possible. Pour the strained juice into glasses (over ice if you prefer) and serve. Watch the how-to video here! https://youtu.be/fRdgh_18TR4 Do you already make your own juices at home? Save-On-Foods Celebrates 15 Years of Serving Londonderry Shoppers

2015-04-05 18:00:00 -0600 + Londonderry Mall

Save-On-Foods, as a part of the Overwaitea Food Group, is celebrating 100 years in business – and it has been successful through the years by following a simple formula of listening to its customers, going the extra mile, and being active in the communities it serves. Save-On-Foods at Londonderry Mall is continuing that fine tradition by playing an important role in the community around it. Whether it is by dropping off flowers at over a dozen local schools and at Northgate Senior's Centre during Random Acts of Kindness week, sponsoring weekly fresh fruit programs at John Barnett School, or dropping by to participate in the “Jump rope for Heart Health day” at Kildare School, the team at Save-On-Foods Londonderry looks for opportunities to put smiles on the faces of people throughout the neighbourhoods it represents. Store Manager Christopher Drobot and the team are always on the lookout for new ways to participate: “We want to be known for our active role in our community, and we want to give back where we can by taking part in the events that mean something to the people that shop with us, the people that we serve.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the partnership between Save-On-Foods and St. Francis of Assisi School. Once a month, Mr. Drobot – or Mr. Christopher as the students call him – will drop by with all the ingredients necessary to provide a nutritious and easy-to-prepare snack for the 300 students at the school and, together with the student leadership team, prepares and delivers the snack throughout the school. (For a quick recap of this program, take a look at this video put together by the great folks over at APPLE Schools.) Serving the community doesn't just stop there, however: every day the team continues to look for and source out new items to serve the changing demographics in the area. Over the last six months, the team have been working hard to add in new items from around the world – rasmalai, naan, chana flour, and 50lb bags of onions can now always be found on display, a nod to the sizeable South Asian community surrounding the store. What's next? “We are going to be introducing about 60 new direct import lines from the Philippines by the end of April,” Christopher says, “and we're continuing to experiment with in and out products from the Maritimes, Scotland...really, it's wherever we think we can snag a great deal for our customers. If someone asks for us to carry something, we try our best to get it; if one person wants it there's a good chance someone else does, too!” As the mall renovates and refreshes itself, Londonderry Save-On-Foods will continue to keep itself relevant and active in the community it serves. Partnering up with other businesses – like Hudson's Bay Londonderry, or the team at 20Vic Mall Management – has also opened up opportunities to showcase “what they do” by getting them close to a number of people they might not otherwise see. Christopher explains: “What we're on the lookout for – what we're always on the lookout for, in fact – is an opportunity to make a difference in our customer's lives, to go the extra mile to make their day that much easier. The more we can listen to our customers to know exactly how to do that, the better position we'll be in to 'Wow' those customers the next time they're in the store.” Recently, Christopher was invited to drop by a Friday Night Jam at Killarney Hall. “I ended up being asked to sing up on stage...it was a fun night and I recognized so many faces from when they shop at the store. It's great to get a chance to connect with the community,” he says with a smile, “and to get to do so outside the store.” This November, Save-On-Foods Londonderry is celebrating 15 years of serving its North East Edmonton community in ways big and small and its dynamic group of over 100 team members would love to help you decide “what's for dinner.”

Construction at the northeast Edmonton location is set to begin immediately with architecture and a new design by Quebec-based firm Lemay Michaud. “The success of our first Edmonton store demonstrates that the Simons experience resonates here,” said CEO Peter Simons. “The 20 Vic Management team is creating a community destination with their revitalization project at Londonderry and we are motivated to work with forward-thinking real estate partners.” Simons, the 175-year-old, family-owned fashion retailer from Quebec City, adds Londonderry to its recently announced expansion into five new cities across Canada: Gatineau, Vancouver, Mississauga, Ottawa and Calgary. Once inside, grand volumes will greet visitors into the contemporary common areas featuring sleek information kiosks and social gathering spaces. “Northeast Edmonton is experiencing unprecedented growth and the completion of the Anthony Henday Drive ring road in 2016 will open up access to our property to an even larger market who currently have to travel a substantial distance to satisfy their shopping needs,” said Greg Orysiuk, Vice President of Leasing, 20 VIC Management Inc. “We’re confident the improvements and new stores we’re bringing to the community will change the face of retail in Northeast Edmonton and enhance the shopping experience for both existing clientele and the new markets opening up to us,” he said. Work is now underway and minimal business disruption is anticipated throughout the project. Further information on the project and specific retailer announcements will be shared over the coming months. Why DIY Is Your New Best Friend.

2014-08-13 18:00:00 -0600 + Londonderry Mall

Have a Saturday afternoon to kill? Want to do something fun with friends and family? Need to get rid of some supplies that have been taking up space? Do It Yourself projects have always been around, but with websites like Pinterest and the sheer amount of content online they have taken off like never before. Here are some tips on getting started, and ideas for things you could make yourself! First thing is getting started. If you have restless pent up creative energy, look for things you need, necessity is the mother of invention after all. Do you need a new way to organize your jewelry? Does a friend have a birthday coming up and you need a gift? If you don’t consider yourself a creative person, that’s okay! Not all art is Shakespeare and sculpture, making simpler crafts can help you find that creative but practical side. Once you have a goal in mind it comes down to supplies and time. Raiding your craft drawer, or spending a couple weeks saving all your newspapers or toilet paper rolls can get you the items you need on the cheap. Department stores like Winners or Army & Navy are always a great option as well to find parts for jewelry or material for costumes. Dollar stores like Dollarama and Dollar Tree are another way to get supplies like glitter and paint for a great deal, and of course there are always the larger craft and material stores like Fabricland. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where you get your supplies, with a little practice you can make incredible things. It’s often a good idea to start small so you can practice and master some of your new skills. Knit or crochet friendship bracelets and scarves for yourself and friends (these can make great thoughtful gifts!) before you make the large blanket. Sew a little purse or wallet before you make a dress or Halloween costume. Once you have a better handle on basic skills you can embark on more ambitious projects. If you are more experienced and can work a sewing machine, there are thousands of free patterns online to help you make just what you are looking for. At the end of the day, this is what is great about DIY projects. You can add your own flair and personality to your home and wardrobe. You can easily tailor things to your needs, if you can’t find a piñata your kid loves, you can make one! Paper Mache and modelling clay can be great for costume props, and you will begin to find that just about anything can be repurposed. They can also be great for bonding time with your friends and family and an easy hobby to share and get into. Hopefully these tips help you get started or inspired with your projects…stay creative Londonderry Shoppers!
